This article is for cPanel accounts. If you are unsure if this is the correct article for you, you can determine the type of account you have with this guide.
This article is designed to show you how to create users that can connect to your cPanel account via FTP. These users can be utilized to upload or download files from your account, as well as make other changes.
Creating FTP Accounts
Once inside your cPanel account, click “FTP Accounts” from within the Files category to see the list of FTP users you have set up.
You will see a blank “Add FTP Account” form near the top of the page. Fill it out as seen below:
- Enter the beginning of the username. Note that FTP usernames are formatted like emails (i.e. - example@domain.com).
- Choose the domain for the @domain.com from the drop-down box.
- Set the password for the username.
Using FTP Accounts
This FTP user can then be used in an application called an FTP client, such as FileZilla or Cyberduck to log in and view the files on your account.
If you want to find details on how to set up an FTP user in an FTP program, you can click “Configure FTP Client". This option will be at the bottom of the page you used to create an FTP account, near the list of FTP accounts already created.
The manual settings section has information on what configurations allow you to access your account with FTP. You can enter this information in the appropriate places in your FTP client to connect. There are a few configuration files that can be used to help set this up for you in Filezilla Core FTP or Cyberduck if desired.
You can read more about how to use FileZilla for FTP at the following link:
Removing FTP Accounts
You can remove an FTP account from the “FTP Accounts” page as indicated above. When you click this option, choose if you would like to delete only the user or if you would like to delete all of the files in the user's folder as well.
Please take note that all of the files in the folder will be deleted, even if the user did not upload those files.
Special FTP Accounts
At the bottom of the FTP Account page, there is a section for “Special FTP Accounts”. These users are created automatically, correspond to your cPanel username, and cannot be modified or removed.
- The first account that has the login as your cPanel username has FTP and if SSH is enabled, SFTP access to your entire cPanel account.
- The second account that ends in "logs" goes directly to where log files are stored for your cPanel account.
