The Power Of Data Centers
Data centers power the online world.
Data centers are an absolutely essential part of how the IT world runs today; without them we would be living in a nonfunctioning world. These behemoth brains of modern technology are the background processes that provide a host of functions, all unseen by the average user.
Way back when, computers were gigantic and took up entire rooms – we’ve all seen the pictures of retro computer systems festooned with blinking lights, cables snaking this way and that, and run by a team of suited-and-booted men in thick-rimmed glasses and slicked-back hair. Today, those are seen as the dinosaurs of the computer age, and most of us carry computer systems far more powerful around with us in our pockets in the form of a smartphone. And yet, even these cell phones or home PCs are not run on their own compact merit alone. They rely on data centers to fulfill all the necessary functions they need in order to operate.
Modern data centers act as complex, sturdy safeguards for large IT systems, and as such require a certain amount of hardware to ensure their chances of failure are next to none. Firstly, they are equipped with vast amounts of cooling equipment; they produce a lot of heat, and so must be kept cool in order to prevent breakdowns as a result of overheating. Secondly, they must be located in both a secure building and location to make certain their safety is never compromised. Thirdly, they require extensive amounts of electricity to run, as well as diesel-powered backup systems in case there’s a power cut, providing a constant stream of energy. Finally, they must be connected to the internet in order to communicate with a vast number of PCs throughout the world.
As for the function of data centers, they provide the storage, oversight, and dissemination of data. As you may have realized, cloud-based applications are processed by information stored in data centers, since the idea behind a cloud application is that you don’t need to have the application on your local computer to be able to use it; all of the necessary data for the application to work is stored in a data center. Also, if you have cloud storage for your personal digital information, it is likely that it’s stored in a data center, so that all those pictures you took on your last holiday will be safe and sound should your house burn to the ground.
Your proximity to a data center can, however, affect performance. Although data tends to be transferred at very high speeds from data center to PC and back, physical distance does come into play. This means that the closer you are to a data center, the faster you will be able to access your information or use a cloud-based application, such as one that’s run on a browser. Therefore, when selecting a company that relies on data center performance to operate efficiently, it is important to select one that has a broad distribution of data centers globally, including one near your main working and/or living environment. With data centers and cloud locations that cover all corners of the globe, UK2 Group and all of its brands have a truly global reach, providing its clients with powerful systems no matter where they are located. Whether it be Sydney or Singapore, Salt Lake City or São Paulo, everyone is covered, in whichever of the 190 countries they live.
Hats off to the data centers of the world.
